PROJECTS

City of Edmonton Scona Road Bridge Rehabilitations

Scona Road and 98th Avenue Bridge Rehabilitations project focused on vital structural repairs and upgrades to key infrastructure in downtown Edmonton. Starting in April 2024, and expected to be completed by August 2024, this project ensures the longevity and safety of these important thoroughfares.

For the Scona Road Bridge, the scope of work included traffic and pedestrian accommodation and staging, structural repairs, HPC concrete deck overlay, barrier replacement, bridgerail repairs, approach paving repairs, and concrete cleaning and sealing. Meanwhile, the 98th Avenue Bridge rehabilitation involved structural repairs to abutments, wingwalls, and prestressed girder ends, installation of a reinforced HPC concrete deck with synthetic fibers, ACP tie-ins, and void grouting.

The project’s key objectives were to rehabilitate deteriorated bridge structures in a busy downtown area, extending their lifespan and revitalizing the infrastructure. Challenges included managing heavy traffic and working within the environmentally sensitive North Saskatchewan River Valley. By using innovative methods like the spin screed or rolling screed for deck paving, the team efficiently worked within the tight area and traffic accommodations.

The collaborative efforts of CWP Constructors, Morrison Hershfield, and the City of Edmonton ensured the project’s success, with the Scona Bridge expected to open by middle of July, and the 98th Avenue Bridge by Mid August, both ahead of schedule. Community engagement through town halls and public hearings kept residents informed and involved, ensuring the rehabilitated bridges would serve the community for many years to come.
